So I had the MPEM go out on my 1997 Speedster. I spent about 1600 to get it repaired at a local shop that way it had a warranty on both the parts and service. After I got it back I went for a test drive... only to find another problem...

I can start both motors seperately however cannot get them both to run at the same time. When I start one motor and go to start the other, the 1st just shuts off. In addition, when I start one motor and then try to turn off the same motor (by pressing the button again) I just get a grinding noise like it's trying to start the same motor again.

I took it back to the same shop and told them they probably just wired it wrong. They told me it doesn't sound like am MPEM and that they were going to charge me for all the time... blah blah. The boat wasn't doing it before I brought it in and to me it sounds as if they just wired it in wrong and want me to cover their expenses to fix it. If it were shorting out I believe it I would still be able ot start and stop each motor with the same button.

Any word on what you guys think??

Thanks in advance!

this is so odd, I have been thinking about this all night (i have no life). At first you would think that they are connected to the same start switch. I don't have a manual with me, but take your mpem cover off and trace the big red wires to the solenoids and see if they are connected right, if the other starter is grinding when one is running that at some point both starters are connected to one switch, or atleast coming into contact. The confusing part is that you can fire them up seperatley. maybe take a picture of the inside of your grey box and post it. im sure if we saw it we could see a wrong wire
