after replacing fuel, fuel lines, filter, selector switch and cleaning carbs this '97 GTX runs awesome (50 plus MPH)...for about 30 minutes. then, it loses power and won't rev above about 3500 RPMs. let it sit for awhile and it takes off at full power again, but eventually sputters to a near halt. ski only has 14 hours and set-up for many years before being refurbished, as described above ($1500 in repairs). not sure how to proceed...this is my first jetski

Sounds like the rectifier is bad.

This is the test procedure:

I had something very similar and it would run for about 15 and then loose power like it was running out of gas. Changed out the rectifier and now it works great, no issues. I did the same thing with changing out the fuel lines and other items and thought for sure if was a fuel related issues and it was not.

Yes. That thing. That is why I said the rectifier due to rkkoeb

Aftermarket and OEM are available.

When I have had them fail they just go out. I have not had one be fine for 30 minutes then go out then be fine again.

I would test it before replacing it. Easy enough to just unplug the red wire when it is acting up.

All I can tell you when it happen to me is that I could ride for about 10-15 minutes with no issue and then is started to act up and loose power like it was running out of gas. All I did was replace the rectifier and have run 1.5 tanks through with no issues at all.

Hmmmm..... my 96 SPI did the same thing. I had just redone the fuel and rebuilt the carb. I rode it for a couple of hours with no issues. The next day I went out in rough water and when I hit some large waves the engine would slow down a bit then pick up and it would get worse and I'd come in, let it sit for 1/2 hour and go back out and repeat. :D I was planning on looking at the electrical but I checked the carb and didn't like the filter I installed, it was a much finer mesh than stock and seemed to be coated with something. I replaced it and have not ridden it since. I may look at the electrics because I have some time.

When starting I get no fire with the engine turning over, then I remove and replace the key and it fires right up. Mine is not a DESS Key.

Is there a pick up on the mag side like the GTX 787 ? I am wondering if I have some debris in there that would cause problems.

Good Stuff !!

My 1996 GTX did the same thing last year with a bad rectifier, ran great for about 15min then wouldn't go over 3500rpm.

I know Matt Braley has been having good luck with some cheap aftermarket ones.

I have been buying the OEM ones from OSD Seadoo since Seadoo discontinued them.
