1997 GTX Rough Idle / smoke

I have a 1997 GTX that is relatively new to me. It is hard to start and smokes quite a bit at idle. However, runs great at higher speeds without hesitation. Even after running it at higher speeds for 15-20 minutes has a rough idle and will die after about 30 seconds. I have done the following:

Put in new gas and Stabil
New spark plugs
New fuel filter
Checked the cable to the oil injection unit

It seems to me to be running too much oil at idle but I am not that familiar with Seadoo mechanics....

What else should I check?

Thanks!

I do have a similar problem. the idle is not good enough and some smoke is seen, but runs great at speed on the lake. When it runs on the hose the idle is just ok, so i assume that the primary problem is the idle RPM under the specified value, as soon as I get some time, I'll try to adjust the idle speed and see if it works... And, of course, wait for someone more experienced to say something useful.

There is a scribe line on the oil pump body and one on the arm, they should be lined up.uploadfromtaptalk1439251468509.jpg

What is your RPM at idle?

Make sure you have spring tension on the oil pumps bell crank. Pull the cable and make sure. It is very easy to screw it up when the carb is taken off. All the guides or guide needs lubed well. Use a hand mirror and make sure the crank returns to marks when you rotate the throttle shaft open and back. Got the correct oil in it?

The idle RPM should be 3000 out of the water and 1500 in the water, so your problem might be just a carb adjustment. Adjust your idle speed and tell us what happens

Need some more help. There are so many variations of engine types and carburetors not sure where to start. I did read the sticky on carb adjustment. This is a 1997 787 engine with dual carbs.

I have gotten as far as removing the flame arrestor. I have located the forward carb adjustment screw for the low speed that has the T-bar. According to the shop manual that should be turned out 3/4 - 1 1/4 turns. Does the rear carb have this same adjustment or is it only on the 1 carb?

Can I put the arrestor back in place and start the ski without putting the case back on?

Thanks for the help....trying to learn as much as I can by doing it myself.

You need to adjust the T screw that you will access thru the throttle cable bracket. That's the one.. And it just needs to be done on the one carb

You can start the ski without the black case just to test the idle

Got the idle adjusted up and it starts much better. Will take it out to check how it performs in the water. NOW another problem I just found while I was putting it back together.

It appears the oil tank is leaking at the seam. Is this a common problem and is it fixable or can you still buy an oil tank for these?

It is a common issue. I believe you can buy a one piece tank. Search the forum, there is a thread on a repair method.

Very common issue. Contact @Minnytonka4me, he will likely have a one piece tank.
