I've always had the slightest bit of play in my steering shaft. I mostly noticed it when coming down on a hard landing. It's never really been an issue, until today. It started getting really loose. When I lift up and down on the handlebars it has a lot of play. After riding for an hour or so it got really loose. Felt as if the whole steering assembly was going to come out of the housing.

Is there a way to tighten this without tearing it all down?

I have a manual but it just shows a sloppy diagram. Doesn't really specify if there is a way to tighten it.

Make sure the 4 bolts holding it to the hull are tight. If it is still loose the plastic bushings could be worn.

Thank you.

I think you're right, it's the bushings. The shaft is loose within the housing itself. I can see the bushing at the end where the cables and wires come out and it's really sloppy. From what I can decipher from the diagram I have, it looks like I have to tear it all down.

I might have that complete part off a 97 gsx, can't remember if the one I have is off a xp or gsx,

give me a couple of hours I can verify. If its off the xp (96) I don't think its a match.

I think I may need the whole housing. I'm going to have to tear it all out to be sure. I'll know more in a couple of days.
