i have a 97 gsx and when I fire it up it runs great and pulls strong But after about 15 minutes of running perfectly I can start to hear a miss. After a few minutes of the engine missing its like it electronically derates to 3060 (+ or - a few) rpm. If I let shut it down and let it sit for a bit it runs great again. Its like something is breaking down when it gets hot. Just looking for some advice. Much appreciated

Buy (2) of these and put them on the engine.

Spark Testor.jpgThis will help you verify a good consistent strong spark. I'm not sure how well it would work if you wanted to test on the water but you could figure something out. I've found more than one problem on these skis with spark deterioration or a weak spark or sporadic spark. This is the best way I know to determine electrical issues.

You could have a fuel issue. Do you have an inline filter on the ski? If so remove it. You can also run a fuel line directly from the fuel baffle to the carb and bypass the fuel system. I don't do this but some people do. There is dirt in the fuel tank that I don't want in the carbs. :)

I wouldn't arbitrarily replace the coil but you could have an issue. I'd eliminate everything else before I replaced parts. These skis always win when you start guessing and it gets expensive. Good Luck !!

Hi I'm new here also. I have 96 xp800 with the same issue. What have done is the coil and I put a new stator on also. Today I'm going to cut back the spark plug cables and put new caps on. I will replace cable at a later time.

Good luck

Hi Steve, I purchased a 1997 GSX a few days ago and am having the same issue. I’ve posted a thread with what I’ve done so far but have yet to figure it out. Let me know how you make out and I will do the same

Hey Steve, not sure if your problem is identical to the one I was having? Sounds similar. Have a look at the thread I started and it will explain what it was doing, in a nutshell it was running good or so I thought for the first 4 to 8 minutes and then would start sputtering, couldn’t get my rpms up past around 4500. Ended up being carboned up rave valves.
