Here's some pictures of the progress I've made on my 1997 GS. The plastics were badly faded. I used a heat gun on them last season and it helped a little, but still looked pretty bad by the end of the year.
I did some research on this and other forums about how to paint them and what colors were close to stock. I chose rattle can spray paint and hoped for decent results. The finished product is much better than I expected from paint out of a can. I used standard issue Rustoleum buildable/sandable primer, Rustoleum 2x Gloss Purple Enamel and Rustoleum Farm Implement John Deere Yellow. The yellow was chosen because it was close enough for the GS and a very good match for the XP hood.
