Just got a 1996 XP off a friend, wont start. engine turns over when jumping the starter so its an electric problem. no power coming out of the rear box to the starter, no power on the black/yellow wire and black wire, no beep when jumping them together. suggestions/thoughts?

Are you sure the small little black wire coming out of the top of the electrical box is connected to the negative terminal of the battery?

Yep, check that little ground. Meaning make sure you have continuity from the ring terminal to the ground point on the coil base. The connector from the box to the exterior cable is prone to corrosion.

Do you have power to the gauges? Check the plug on the front of the mag housing.

Mikidymac I think I checked all my grounds... going to go through and re check them all again on saturday (will not have time tomorrow). racerxxx, me and a buddy were just talking about that earlier tonight. will check on that saturday as well, I was reading its prone to corrosion. I do not have power to the gauges, there is no power anywhere on the ski, no beeps no nothing. Multi meter shows power going into the rear electric box and thats about it. the start/stop button was reading 43 volts, but that whole peice that belongs on the handle is dangling from the bars (it has bike bars on it, have originals coming) and is near the magnet, thinking that the magnet is screwing with that measurement. Other than that theres nothing anywhere. Was also thinking maybe the solenoids shot..?

Just an fyi as well, no fuses are blowing and no fuses were blown when I opened her up and started digging through

went out and took a look at it yesterday. power going into rear box, ground is good, power coming out going through wires to the front of the ski. i have 12v in the red/blue strip, 43mV in the brown one to the temp sensor, and nothing in the other two. i did find that the mag housing plug was unplugged, plugged it in, no difference. didnt get around to checking any power in the front electric box yet.

i saw a video of a guy testing an 03 mpem, is there a way to test a 96?
