1996 Sportster won't start :(

As my husband is outside cursing our 1996 Sea doo Sportster (4 seat.... single 85 HP), I have come to this forum in hopes of a little help. Last time we were out on the water (salt water) we were running along nicely and suddenly the engine just slowed down and would not go over 15 mph. We evened out the weight in the boat by putting our son in the front on the boat and oddly the engine kicked back up....then after approx 10 mins it happened again so we turned the engine off and it would not start again, had to be towed back. My husband charged the battery and replaced the spark plugs. Out of water (with hose attached), tried to start and engine just spins. He cleaned the fuel filter but it still just spins with an occasional sputter like it wants to turn over. Any suggestions would be GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!! Thanks

check under the boat, in the intake area, see if anything got sucked up.
