Hey! Just joined the forum today as I prepare to start working on an old Seadoo that I just acquired. I ended up paying a grand for both a 96 Seadoo XP800 and a 93 Seadoo SP with a double trailer (both skis run alright so I feel relatively confident in the fact that I made a good deal). Ultimately I want to have both these skis in immaculate condition, but I'm starting with the XP first. Ive never worked on a Seadoo before so i decided to go ahead and create this thread in an effort to document my progress/ (hopefully) bounce any questions I might have off of more knowledgeable people. Anyways, here are my plans as of right now.

The first thing that I want to do is get the ski operating at 100%. I rode it briefly, and it starts super easily, idles great (maybe a little fast?), but when i go to open the throttle it is not super responsive, and it bogs down a bit as it accelerates. Eventually the ski will accelerate fully, but it struggles to reach that point and will start to bog down again after i let off the throttle. There are a couple things that I plan on doing/checking first.
- First: I want to check the rectifier. Not sure if this would be the issue, but I heard that it is easy to check (disconnecting the red wire from the rectifier) so i want to try it first.

- Second: I want to check the carbs to make sure they aren't gummed up or anything.

If anyone has any additional suggestions I would greatly appreciate it.

With any luck I'll be able to get it up and running relatively easily. After I do this I plan on moving to the exterior of the craft in an effort to make it look nice. Im not 100% sure what i want the end result to be though. I am torn between restoring the ski to its original appearance (replica decals etc), or customizing it. Any thoughts on this? Anyways, this is what I believe will be the longer process, as the exterior of the ski seems to be in pretty rough shape. There are a large number of cracks in the gelcoat at the front of the craft that would need to be dealt with. In addition to this, it appears that the front of the ski might have been painted (there is some peeling and the yellow is slightly different). Could I sand back down to the original gelcoat and then repair the cracks from there? Also, will new gelcoat match the original yellow well, or will the fading of the original coat be too noticeable. Additional issues include peeling decals and the seat was recovered with a fabric that does not match the original yellow of the ski.

Anyways, this is where im currently at in the process of completing this project. Any input would be appreciated! Ill attach the files that I have on hand, and ill add some more later.

Man that gelcoat on the 96 is rough but i still think you did alright for $1000. Could easily get $500 for the trailer and recoop your other $500 out of the ski's. The 95 and 96 xp800 seem to be some of the most desired 2-stroke ski's out there. So again you did fine.

I 100% agree, gelcoat is terrible. Luckily, the engine is a 2012 remanufactured SBT, and seems to be very solid. My hope is that the money and time I save from not having to do a ton of engine work justifies the extra time and energy that has to go into repairing the exterior of the craft.

Gel coat does not normally crack like that so it might be paint you can sand off and restore the gel. That looks like lacquer paint cracking, maybe the ski was previously damaged and repaired with lacquer paint? Still not a bad deal you got there.

Looks like an old repair. She probably took a hit back in the day. What's it look like on the inside of that area?

Well that makes three of us. Definitely atypical. What makes me unsure if its paint is thst one big chip. It goes down quite a bit, and i find it hard to believe that they put paint on that thick? The more i think about it, I definitely think youre onto something as far as the ski being previously damaged. Regardless I’ll definitely start sanding away at it and see if i cant make some magic happen. Thanks for the input guys!

Here a few more pictures some of the engine and aclose up of the front. Theres also a picture inside the inside of the hull up front.

Ha ha.... I always look for the locations where people live and think... boy o boy if they lived near me I could hook them up with stuff. !! Well... bro I'm in Louisiana too. :D :D I have a spare 1996 XP hull I am gonna toss but it looks great. I will be pulling parts of it as well and keeping some. If I can help you out let me know. I am near Slidell. Hit me up !!

Spent the day building some carts built so i could get the skis into the shop.... sanded some of the paint off and found what looks to be where the ski previously had its gelcoat repaired, but the colors dont match at all.... i can only assume thats why they decided to paint it. In addition to this, i found more evidence of this ski being involved in a wreck... I was also able to confirm thst the rectifier is not the problem in the ski. On to the carbs.

Unless you like working with fiberglass and gelcoat, I would hit up etemplet for that free hull. The amount of work to repair the top side and the nasty crack under the rub rail, it would be quicker and easier to swap everything to a good hull. Just my 2¢

Working with fiberglass and gelcoat is definitely not my forte... talking with etemplet about getting the hull rn.

Just opened up the carbs.... they look extremely clean... should i continue on with a carb rebuild? Or should I check elsewhere for my problem. The ski only runs in the reserve fuel position.... could this have something to do with my problems?

Four things i have learned to do on every ski i acquire is
1) replace the fuel selector
2) replace fuel lines (if they are still the old grey lines)
3) rebuild carbs
4) replace fuel/water separator filter and o-ring
