1996 Seadoo GTX: Kind-of Worried.

A few weeks back I started the jet ski for the first time (the normal way, using the flush connection) after storage, and it ran great. But, it stalled while the water was running into the ski, it was only running into ski with the engine off for about 2-3 seconds. But I started it a few times with the flush connection again, and it as well ran great. But today I started it without water for like 6-7 seconds and gave it some throttle, and some blackish water came out, but it didn't do this earlier using the fresh water.

(Btw, I blew out the waterbox [all of the times I started it with water])

Is there anything I should do, and again it doesn't sound any different from when I first started it after storage.

It was probably nothing more than some water that was hanging around in the exhaust mixed with the fogging oil and winterization products.

I've never started mine on hose. Don't know why so many people do that. Go to the lake verify
Everything is working and oil level is good if you still have injection and blast it out, ride it.

if you can't ride then dunk ski and trailer in water strapped down and have at it. Hose is a bigger hassle.

lol, you know...I don't know why I didn't think of this! (running in water on trailer). Would be so easy to check things out without risking an "Uh oh..." on the water.

Many fire it up without a hose at home to make sure all is good. The only real reason you need to do the hose thing at all is to flush the engine after running is salt water or if you ran it in shallow water and may have sucked up sand or mud. When you use the hose, the water flows in reverse, so if there is something in there, flushing will often get it out.

Well, just basically asking if (2-3seconds) with that water pressure will hurt the engine? But, I will no longer use the hose :)

2-3 seconds i doubt would do anything, you can still use hose, its just i don't see need to.

but i fire mine up at house like joe said for a couple seconds, make sure it brapps if I'm worried about issues at lake, then again i take my battery out of ski, dry all lake water off of it, and put on battery maintainer after every ride, I don't like second guessing anything on electrical starting system after driving to lake,

Yeah, the jet ski runs perfectly fine for a 2-stroke (even when it's cold). It was 45 degrees today, and it started in 2 seconds without the choke.

Also, how long do you think I should let it warm up (when I use it in the water) I've never even had it in the water yet.

No, that short of time with the water on and the engine off you should be fine. But,,, if it was running and it stalls, there is water in there already. So it likely has a great value than 2 or 3 seconds. That said, it should still be fine. But again, unless you have a need to flush the engine, you do not need the hose. You can not run the engine any longer if it is on the hose or off the hose as the carbon seal is not being cooled in either case.

A guy I know was running his 96 GTX on the hose and went inside "for a moment" that stretched into 5 minutes at least. Came back out to find the Seadoo had stalled at some point. No idea how long the hose was running but enough to flood the engine.

Called him a few names regarding his decision to step anywhere away while the machine was running on a hose..

He would have destroyed the Carbon Seal at a five-minute run anyways. So either way, he would have had some sort of an issue..

Every ski I build from scratch gets run on the hose several time before I even think of going to the river. I'm not about to piss away 35 minutes one way driving to the river with a fresh build behind me just to find out I have a stupid water leak. If it passes that test I go to the river and keep it strapped down and run it on the trailer, if it passes that test it is allowed to be unleashed off the trailer. If I drove there and had a leak that would unravel me knowing a 5 minute hose check could have resolved it.

Well you live further from lake than I do so you have your standard operating procedures. For me hose doesn't provide load on engine/drive and I'm not that far from lake. Everyone has their desired way of starting ski.

EDIT: this post jumped from one thread to the next ugh. Random

I agree it wouldnt have been great on the carbon seal, but im not sure it wouldve been destroyed. those things are pretty tough
