Hey everyone,

I got the 95 XP deutsch plug fixed and that ski is good to go. I have shifted focus to the first 96 XP. I got the jet pump off finally and observed that the VTS rod was wiggling slightly. I could shift the VTS motor unit (part 12) up and down significantly as well. I observed that there was no grommet (part 40) but I do not believe this was the cause. I ordered a grommet anyway just to be on the safe side.

It seems that I have an extra piece unless pic number 1 is the seal washer? I also don't see where I have the spacer which might be why the entire rod/unit wiggles? Can anyone look at these pics and figure out if I am missing anything (I had already removed the nut FYI).

I am also looking for an OEM starter for the 96. As far as I can tell online, the 717 OEM starters are different and that is all that I see online. Any source for the OEM starters by chance? Bombardier told me that they are not making them anymore. Thanks for any help!

I'm a little comfused with all this... but I'm going to try.

The VTS motor and housing shouldn't move. It's screwed down... and should have a threaded collar to hold the "Snout" through the hull. (don't see the nut in your fist pic)

As far as the comment about #1 being a seal of some kind.... well... in what you have posted... it's the pushrod? It's on ball joints, and it's supposed to move.

Seadoo officially stopped supplying parts a while ago for these +20 year old toys. The OEM starters are soo tough compared to the aftermarket units... I have just been getting cheap used starters from ebay. Then I take them apart, clean them, and replace the brushes. (just get them from people with good feedback)

If you find a denso starter I believe it is oem, those are easily found online and I personally have one and they are great starters

Thank you for the replies! Dr. Honda, I apologize for my lack of clarity regarding the VTS issue and will attempt to describe the problem better.

When everything regarding the VTS was assembled (including the nut which was removed before I took the pic) and the push rod was connected to the jet pump, I could still shift/twist the entire VTS housing. It swivels along the screw in part 28 (why I thought maybe the grommet was the problem but I can't see how it would be). Part 28 is mounted to the hull though and doesn't move.

An example is that when I grab the VTS housing unit with my thumb being on the left, top of the cover and my other four fingers being on the bottom and I twist my wrist clockwise, the entire housing unit rotates as far as I can twist my wrist. In my 95, the VTS housing is solid and does not move. This led me to think that I was missing the spacer (part 43) but I am not sure if the spacer is actually inside the hull where the VTS pole goes through or where exactly it is supposed to go?

When I was referring to #1 being some type of seal I meant my first attached picture. Is that part number 29 on the diagram or is my part different than the OEM one? It looks like the OEM washer seal is against whatever the black circular piece is that is up against the hull. Is that black piece supposed to be affixed to the hull or is it supposed to move as well because I can move it up and down slightly? Whatever the part is that is against my hull, it is preventing me from pulling the VTS pole out to clean everything and figure out why the entire system is loose. The part has a rubber gasket around the outside that I can peel off slightly but whatever it is connected to isn't budging.

Regarding the OEM Denso starter, I will continue to search. I have checked ebay and craigslist but only find starters for the 717 which appears to have an extra bendix tooth (9)? compared to the 787 starters (8)? I messaged Minnetonka last week and am hoping he has at least one (ultimately I will need two) but he has been very busy lately.

I hope all of this makes sense. I apologize for so many questions that are probably non-issues for those that are mechanically inclined. This forum is one of the best out there in any category. Thank you for helping keep the 2-strokes alive!

THe bottom of the housing attaches to a stainless pin bolted to the hull on the inside. Is this what you are missing?

As far as starters the aftermarket ones are junk. Contact Nick or Jess at Westside Power Sports for a tested good used one, @Minnetonka4me .

Thanks for the response. The stainless pin bracket apparatus (part 28) is mounted to the hull and the VTS is attached onto it without the grommet but still wiggles. I apologize for not explaining everything right. I am going to try to make a video tonight and see if I can post it here to better show what I am trying to describe.

I will reach out to Nick again, thank you!

Just FYI in case anyone comes across this thread, the problem was fixed.

The VTS no longer wobbles "sideways." It appeared that the problem was where the spacer fits into the groove on the inside of the hull. The hull had too much black RTV and the spacer would not fit flush against the hull in the cut-out area. I cleaned everything out by removing the excess and prior black RTV used by the previous owner and then used the clear silicone sealant per the manual (Permatex though instead of Loctite since I couldn't find it in-store) and put everything back on with no wobble.
