Hi Gang, i have a 1996 GTX Seadoo that will move in water at an idle, but when I try and accelerate it just rev's up and wont go, would appreciate any feed back that you have Thanks Rex

You are sucking a bunch of air from somewhere.

My guess is the carbon seal is toast, but a full inspection of the pump will need to be done.

If it was me... since the cavataion is so bad... I would order a new carbon seal, boot, and ring. (and the o-rings) Also, I would get a new pump neoprene gasket, and wear ring. Take the pump off, and replace those parts, and it should take care of your issues.

Even if the impeller is beat up... you should be OK as long as it isn't destroyed.

Thanks Dr Honda, for the quick reply, much appreciated, It was not exactly what I was hoping for but i did expect it would be bad, would anyone have a link to a parts list of the parts Dr Honda has mentioned thanks again Rex

Before you order random parts it would be a good idea to try turning the driveshaft and see if the splines have worn beyond holding at the flywheel, I think 8 of 10 pumps need some help but if you can get the turning power to the pump all is lost.

Ok Thanks Guys, I grabed a free breakdown of pump removal online, I have the whole pump off now, and I can see a large gouge in the plastic wear ring, the impellar has a few nicks in it, would you suggest replaceing all the parts in the pump or just the impellar and wear ring ? Thanks Rex

When you opened the oil tray was it milky or just stinky? milky is oil/water and a close exam of the bearings will be needed to determine if burnt rollers are evident then replace the faulty parts, the wear ring is just what the name implies - a wear item, be sure to apply a generous bead of sealer where the pump goes back in against the ride plate, this is an area where leaking occurs which results in cavitation and loss of speed/power - careful examination of each moving part is the best way to make this a one stop repair.

The oil was nice and stinky LOL but no water or milky color, it was a deep dark blue,

If no milk then you can drain it by tilting the front and taping a freezer bag to the cone to catch that stinky stuff, refill with synthetic oil, should be seadoo stuff to prevent making jello from unknown mixtures or remove the cone and tape the bag as mentioned - now you can use you local synthetic to fill it up. I do not know how seadoo does it but the new oil smells as bad as the old stuff, I use amsoil but there is prolly many more to choose from.

Hello Dr Honda...I also have a 96 GTX and I'm changing out the carbon ring...when removing the pump on my ski I noticed there was no neoprene seal...I checked the manual and noticed the 96 GTX doesnt come with a Neoprene Seal...
