1996 GTI starter problems

I need some help just to confirm what I think I know. I have a 1996 GTI. I had the engine rebuilt by SES. I rebuilt the carbs with Mikuni kit., jet pump and OEM starter. Replaced the fuel lines, fuel selector, filters, Oil filter, check valves, water lines/ hoses.. Replaced the ground cable. replaced the carbon seal / bellows etc. I basically didn't want anything that was 20 years old to fail.

The ski ran great for break in trip. It ran great for another trip. I kept the new battery on a battery tender. I noticed the starter was acting up. It would engage the flywheel and crank the engine, but quickly kick out and spin. I checked all the connections. I previously cleaned all connections and verified the original solenoid was working. it would drop about 1 VDC across the poles, however the start switch and solenoid operated correctly.

So this week I ordered a new solenoid and Bendix. I just put them in and before I reinstalled the lower exhaust pipe, I verified the starter worked. It did. It cranked the engine over with the plugs in and cables grounded. I reassembled everything and tried to start it. The starter engaged for 10 seconds or so. I tried a couple times and then a click and whine. The starter case is HOT. The cables are not hot. The battery was load tested good. It is also new. The engines turns over by hand easily.

Since I just rebuilt the OEM starter and now replaced the solenoid and Bendix ( I do think the original bendix was bad), is this starter toast? Should I order another used OEM and rebuild it?

Oh, in case you wondered, Yes, I am pretty PO'd at the Seadoo right now...

Thanks!
