Greetings, I have a 1996 GTI, w 717, dual carb engine. When I attach the dess cord sometimes I get 2 beeps and sometimes nothing. With the dess cord attached, when I touch the St/ Stop button, just touch not hold, the engine cranks and continues to crank. When I touch the button again the cranking stops. I have replaced the S/ St button with a new one. Is there any way to by-pass the dess system (it's a royal pain).
Any ideas and suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks.

No, you can't bypass the DESS.

It sounds like your starter solenoid is sticking. It could be bad but a weak battery can also cause it to stick.

Well Well! Found the problem - The st/ Stop button, must have had a SLIGHT short. Yes I know you can't be SLIGHTLY pregnant, but this switch was. I barley got a reading with an ohm meter, but that was enough. Went to a local Sea Doo dealer (Cove Marina ) and was quoted $149.00 for a new switch. After I recovered I went to a local hardware store and purchased a door bell button , $3.49, works just fine!!

If you have the shop version of candoo pro or an old BUDS handheld programmer with the race tuning software you can indeed turn off DESS.

I can't say I recommend the door bell buzzer but WSM make replacement switches that are way more reasonable than OEM ones. Part number 004-116 replaces part number 278000501 and retails for $39.95, The WSM switch does come with the connectors to hook it up to the stock harness but you will have to crimp and or solder them onto the wires .
