Hey all, I havent posted much on this forum since ive been a member b/c ive had so much success reading other peoples problems (mine are usually the same) But this is my current problem,

On my 96 Challenger I took it out yesterday and ran it up to 50+ MPH after a head gasket change + new carbs i was suprised it had never been that fast before, then i jumped a wake and it started to kinda act funny. In forward It would rev up to about 7K for a second or two take off and then bouce back down to about 3K and repeat this process (similar to the rev limiter in neutral). I did this in reverse too and it maintained a constant 6-7K RPM, which leads me to believe it is not a mechanical problem but somthing that got knocked, it has done this before but it has been intermitent.

Any help would be apprecieated.

Tony

I was also thinking this is the first tank of gas (sat over winter w/ stabil) would water cause this? Or would air in the new carb lines cause this?

Normaly i would say fuel to this problem.
At idle the engine isn't using much fuel so the carbies fill up and all is good, when you gun it, the accelerator pump squirts fuel into the carbies for take off, if there is a blocked filter or line the carbires empty giving a lean condition, once the revs drop back down the carbies fill again and away you go only to have them empty again.
I would go over your fuel system again, maybe you dislodged something and it is blocking the small filter in the carby, check the easy stuff first, main fuel filters. ever since iv'e gone to premix iv'e had to clean these filters on a regular basis, once for every two tanks.
Forgot to mention the fuel selector, the gum from the old grey fuel lines used to block these, check and clean, if you havn't already.

After thinking about it and what :agree: said im thinking i have a leak in my fuel lines after putting in the carbs, anyone have an easy way to vaccum test the lines, or problem areas?

Vaccum Tested the lines, found the fuel return line was not tight enough, ran great when tightened, a simple flathead fixed this problem!

I also have a 96 boat just like yours. I have never experienced this problem but with mentioning the 3k rpm, and just jumping a wake, I am thinking maybe something with the reverse gate? I know mine will cap at about 3k if not all the way forward. Just trying to help. Good luck!

sorry for the post. for some reason my browser did not list all the post, until i made mine :) Glad you found the problem.
