Hello people,

Just bought a 1996 challenger w/ a 787 motor. Took it out today and I noticed a few things:

1st problem-At low to mid engine rev something shakes pretty hard under the rear cover, I was thinking the impellor is rubbing on the housing?

2nd problem-No power when taking off, I got 38mph on somewhat choppy water. It just seems that I am not pushing any water. This may tie into problem #1.

3rd problem-The upper seal is leaking gas/oil, the engine compartment fills with quite a bit of exhaust, even when it is sitting in my garage w/out being ran for a week there is a strong gas smell always present. I cannot find any leaks, I do not know where this smell coming from. Today when I was running it, we ran approx. 10 min. and I opened the storage compartment behind the spotter seat and blue smoke poured out.

Any advice or previous experiences would be appreciated.
Thanks!

Well to me that sounds like you could have a bolt loose on the motor bracket that attaches to the boat. As for the smoke sounds like a exhaust issue. I wonder if you have something blocking it.

I did notice that part of the exhaust, (the can underneath where the exhaust goes out) is not strapped down properly with the factory strap. The previous owner strapped it down with a black bungee strap. I'll check it out and this may be my exhaust problem and loud noise problem. As far as the top intake (where the carbs attach to the block) problem, can just the gasket be replaced, or will I need to redo the entire engine?

tif its the intake, theres an o-ring there, or the base carb gasket. Grab the pipe, and lift, this will tell you, if any/all motor mounts are broke.

I'll try that tonight and report. I hooked it up to water and ran it on idle, but I did not rev it up any, I'll also do that, I'm hoping that I can spot the exhaust leak.
