I bought a 1995 sportster and it seems to put out a lot of smoke. to start it, i have to throttle all the way up and then start it. when i throttle down, it dies. when i start it, it smokes a lot. i am unable to start it after it dies. do i need a carb adjustment? can anyone gice advice. it has a 657x engine. would it be better to buy a long block? is there anywhere that i can buy one for cheap?

Only a guess but if its a auto lube Rotex then the oil pump adjusts as you throtle up and down. They are prown to breaking where the cable adjusts the pump, sounds to me like the oil pump is stuck to full lube and over lubricateing your engine. Check this and if it is there a couple houndred quid and change your plugs or clean them s they will be ver oily. Hope this helps

where is the cable located? i just checked the plugs and they are clean. do i have to throttle all the way up to start this motor? i am new to this, can you help me?

as i said this is a guess, what engine is you have? Roterx 2 cylinder 2 stroke? Im not exactly sure, I had a gsx 1000 ltd that did the same and i had the Oil pump replaced. at another guess if indeed yu have this engine or similar there will be a cable comeing from the throtle some how. now again im prob not the right person to totaly help you but if you add the 2 stroke oil to a seperate tank then ide put my money on that pump. sorry i cant help more. Have a look though at the manual's section, thats helping me right now loads with my problems.

Seals

Here's a few quotes from this link......check it out.

It's possible, that your rv seal is leaking. When that happens, it'll leak, and build up in the journal assembly, where the gas/oil mixes in, prior to transport to top end.

It may also be your crank seals and not the rotary valve seal. The only way to really know for sure is to remove the intake manifold and check it out. As for R/R of the rotary valve shaft and its seal....it "can" be done without tearing the motor down but if the splines are damaged then it'd need to be torn down and cleaned.

The smoke is from extra oil. Because it's an older engine... I would say it's coming from the RV seal, or the center crank seals.

Before going too far with this... I would check the compression. 150 psi is perfect... 135 psi is acceptable.

3 times this summer, I've had people bring me boats with running issues, and I found very low compression. One of the engines was way down at 65 psi, and I'm surprised it would even start.

Check your compression, and we will go from there.
