I just put new batteries in my 1994 SPX and 1995 XP when, after one ride the SPX would not start or even turn over. I pulled the cover and the positive cable had broken free from the battery terminal, still with the lead post attached. Looked like it had melted off. The negative cable looked like it got REAL hot as well. The insulation next to the terminal had shrunk back about 3/4 inch. No fuses blew but I have yet to try a new battery to see if it starts.

Are there any checks I can do to see if things are ok before I blow something up????

The regulator is bad, as it regulates the power being generated from the Mag to charge the battery. It's not doing it's job.

Thanks Karl

I assume the regulator is in the sealed electrical box with the starter solenoid? Is there a way to check it before replacement?

Check the battery before you start it with a multi meter, it should have 12.4 volts+- start the engine it should be nor more than 14.4Volts+-. If it's higher or equal to the battery before starting it needs replacement. Be careful with your situation It already over cooked 1 battery.
