Is that the diagnosis, that the brushes weakened where the Bendix doesn't function normally?

I'll check it out. Have a starter on order to arrive by wednesday

Cleaned some terminals, made sure the impellor is not seized. I can get the solenoid to make every time now. Still not understanding why the starter won't engage, bolted back to the engine, even when I short the solenoid n.o. contacts, although it engages when it is not installed on the engine.

Good morning, I'm new here to the forum. I've owned this 96 GTI for 2 years and haven't had any problems with it. I put a fresh battery in and it is charged, 12.6v. Sometimes the starter engages, most often it does nothing. When it does engage, it does not continue. My start switch proves good...
