Hi, I live in Melbourne Australia, where it can get down to around 4 degrees Celsius in the winter, but never freezing.
Every winter I have taken my 2004 RXP to the dealer to have it winterised, but it isn't cheap.
Do I really need to do this if I take the ski out on the water once a month in the winter ?

re: winterizing in melbourne

Finally, someone else on this forum who lives in Melbourne!!

We own 2 skis a 99 GTX LTD and a Yamaha Gp760 and I don't winterize either of them. They are both garaged. However I do seasonal maintenance on them. They are used every 2nd week during summer at Hazelwood only. And about every 3rd week autumn and spring and once to twice during winter.

However, if you can find out what the dealer does to your ski to winterize it, run it by a couple of the more experienced guys on the forum and find out if it is neccessary.
I'm not saying that the dealer you use may be ripping you off but I've been to a couple of Seadoo dealers in Melbourne and got quotes of between $2000 to $4500 variance between dealers, for a top end rebuild!!!??? So maybe sniff around to another dealer if you feel the job getting done is a little rich.
I guess always get a second opinion.
Certainly maintenance has to be done on your ski per year, you never know some of this could be done by yourself and possibly save you money$$$. But get advice first on how to do it right.

Personally some of the winterizing techniques in 99 manual i.e flusing with coolant is unneccessary in Melbourne because it never freezes. I guess it depends where you live in Melbourne and if the ski is kept outside.

Cheers & drive it like you stole it!!!

I live in Charleston SC, where we might get three light freezes a year. I bought a 2002 gtx this spring from a family member who bought it new. I saw 6 old receipts for yearly service that were all about a 150 us dollars. That included changing tha spark plugs and changing the pump oil. Nothing was done to "winterize" the ski as far as I could tell. That sounds fair to me, but I will save that money and do the services myself.
