Hi all, starter on my xp 717 won't stick out anymore and I recently blew the top end on my gsx rfi 787. So I was wondering if I could use the one on my gsx and use it on my xp?

Nope with an exclamation point. I just pulled one off a ski where someone tried that. First of all the starter housing is threaded on the 787 and the thru holes are in the engine casing. It is just the opposite on the 717.

I tried to use the starter by drilling thru holes in the starter mounting flange. I couldn't get the correct angle for the mount to work because there was only one set of holes to mount the stater cylinder and brushes (the positive connection for the battery cable was in the wrong position and too close to the engine housing). If I could have rotated the barrel 90 degrees that would have worked. Perhaps a starter you have MAY have 4 threaded holes to mount the barrel. If so you might have a shot at it. Lotta work but that's so with everything.

You gotta be careful too because rotating the barrel can change the rotation of the starter. Ask me how I know that. LOL Life is an interesting adventure. :D :D
