i am new to Seadoo and i am looking to purchase a used boat. i have located 2 - 1997 units one being a speedster w/ twin 85 hp engines and the other is a challenger w/ a single 110 hp engine. i realize the twins will offer more total hp but is it all that obvious of a change and are there any other significant differences between the two?

for starter boat, get the single 110 boat. Less maintennce if something happens. Aso, its a fast boat, and awesome motor.

thnx for the reply. how fast is the 110 hp unit. i have heard the twins will do 50 or better. i want this boat simply as a pull toy for tubes and skis.

110hp problems

Hey Man - I was just in the market for a good used boat as well and I am sure you will get plenty of input on here but the local folks I spoke with said the 85hp were a more durable motor and therefore have less problems when looking at something used.

I ended up with a '97 speedster about three weeks ago and so far it has been great. I just use it for towing behind my cruiser and pulling a tube; it works great.

97 speedster

It will run about 53-55 with three adults. I had it out the other morning early on smooth water by myself and it looked pretty close to 57-58.
It is way more fun than I had imagined.

One thing to look for, I was told to check the exhaust and make sure the paint isn't coming off (inside the engine compartment) this will mean it got too hot!

good luck.
