Water box clog?

Hello all, odd question here. Is there a such thing as a water box getting clogged or sludged up over time? While testing a ‘97 GTI, twice the exhaust coupler blew apart while under acceleration. The big coupler between the pipe and the tapered cone. I tightened the clamps after the first time, and it still blew off. And went it went, it was a pop like it was under a ton of pressure. Curious if these ever get clogged? Or need cleaned. In the GTI, I noticed the water box is much bigger than say an XP of the same year. And it doesn’t have that sharp “pa Ping Ping Ping” exhaust note when out of the water. A ‘94 gts I have sounds way more crisp. Ideas?

Check that your exhaust hose has not collapsed,,,feel it,,,and you can tell if it has separated,,also,,,remove the water box,,,and shake it,,,you may have an inner baffle that has broken from its weld and pluggs the exhaust outlet.

Ok yeah I grabbed the rear hose. The one that goes over top of the jet shaft to the outlet on the rear of the ski. It felt very thin and squishy. Is this normal? I’ll take it off and the muffler out and see what’s inside. Maybe flush the muffler with some muratic acid for a few mins. Thanks!

Oops,,,no need for any kind of acid on a jetski..!!!...if the hose feels squishy,,,pull it off,,,you will be able to look inside to see if it has separated,,,take the water box off,,,and give it the shakes,,,they do not plug up,,,its all tons of hollow space with 1 or 2 baffles.

Ok I’ll be pulling it all apart starting tomorrow. Hope I find something. The exhaust right now has a bawum, bawumm, sound. Not the crisp pa Ping Ping Ping of a normal 2 stroke. Maybe it’s just that the GTI has a beer keg for a water box. Could I swap in the smaller XP/GS water box?

Took exhaust apart, the tube was ok. No broken baffles or clogs that I could see. I did find……the previous owner had the cooling lines swapped. The hose coming from the garden hose flush fitting was going to the “in” side of the head. The hose coming from the “pressure zone” in the jet was going to the “out” side of the head. Is this a big enough deal to cause these issues? Like maybe it was over filling the water box somehow? All things corrected and headed to the lake in the morning for a test. Thanks.
