So, I've been looking for a donor ski for a jet jon project I want to build.

I recently had a friend offer to sell me a 1997 (I think) SP with a 717D - which from what I understand is basically a detuned 717.

I agreed to purchase the ski about 3 minutes before I found out this 717 isn't your average 717. Essentially making the same power as a 587.

I'm going to go through with the purchase any way, and I figured I could still go through with the build and if it's anemic, I could always find a 717 down the road and just bolt it in.

I thought I'd post up here and see if anyone here had any success converting this to the standard 717 or if it would even be worth the trouble?

TIA

I don't know if you'll be able to get it to make as much power as a standard 717 because the port timing and ignition timing is different. You might be able to get a bit more power out of it by swapping the carbs and rotary valve from a 717, but there will be a good amount of tuning involved to get it running right, and I'm not sure if it would work at all. I think your best bet is to leave the engine how it is until you finish the rest of the project.

This is the direction I'm leaning. Many have reported that a 587 pushes their 1448's just fine, so I should be ok and if I'm not, I could always fine a true 717 and just bolt it in.

From what I understand the rotary valve and the disk carbs are the only difference. Both of which are very simple to swap and time. @Matt Braley might know more
