Thank god I installed a bilge pump

Took the skis to the lake today.

The XP was riding great. finally getting near the end of my break-in period on the new motor.

I found a nice flat spot and started cruising with the throttle at around 50%. all the sudden the ski came off plane and wouldn't accelerate anymore. The motor was winding up just fine but it was like my impeller was no longer spinning with it.

The first thought I had was that the splines on the drive shaft had stripped out. The strange thing was it would still move just not fast. All I could get out of it was basically idle speed.

About then I decided I needed to flip my bilge on. When I did so the thing started pumping water hard. It took a solid 5 minutes to drain everything that had filled the hull and almost immediately after shutting it off I had to start it back again and it ran for a few minutes before it stopped pumping water. I repeated this procedure for the next 10 minutes while I putted the ski back to shore. It was filling with water at an alarming rate.

This was the culprit

I did this repair years ago and my only guess is I didn't get the motor/driveshaft aligned correctly and the vibrations tore it out again.

The moral of the story is thank god I have a bilge pump installed on the ski. I was far enough out and taking on water fast enough that it would undoubtedly have sank if I didn't have one.

I'll be getting this repaired once my disappointment has subsided!
