testing charging system

12v light randomly comes on and wont turn over the starter. Relocated grounds and still have same issue. How do I tat the charging system? Volt meter on the battery terminals while running?

test at about 5500 rpm, if over 15 volts then regulator needs replaced. I think mine reads about 14.
 
Yes. must be 12.4v or more. Have your battery load tested at an auto part store.
Check your battery at 5500 rpm, if more than 15vdc, the rectifier is bad. If it tests good and battery tests good, you may have metal bits or cathair metal strands in your Stators coils and should be vacuumned out or they can burn out the coils or the rectifier. Get in there.
