Steering cable removal - WILL NOT BUDGE

Suke and I have been trying to get this thing out for 2 days (95 XP800)

Someone please tell me how to get this thing out!

I thought about that. Nut came off super easy. Here's where we both get hung up. Mine came off with some persuasion but still came off with a few whacks of the hammer. For the life of me I can't remember if it was the black top hat like piece inside the hull is what you hammer on towards the pump or if that's not what you need to persuade out the back of the hull.

Are you saying slide hammer attached to the steering cable pulling from the rear? I was thinking that or an air hammer.... Which sadly neither of us have.

I use a bolt cutters, clip it right near the threads inside and then just what ever means necessary to beat, break and twist. Then just break down and buy a new cable.

After the nut is backed off on the inside I lock a pair of Vise Grips on the metal threaded part of the cable. Then lock another pair right in front of the first pair. Try twisting and spraying in lube to help things get started. Then beat it backwards with all your might. One set of Vise Grips will just slide back that's why I need 2 on the stubborn ones like that.

I just hope a new steering cable fixes this UMI issue.

Updating this for anybody else that comes across this post with the same issue.

I finally got the cable out and should have done it this way from the start.

From the pump side, use a dremel tool to cut down the 2 plastic half moons held on by the metal collar. Once those are cut away just use needle nose to pull the metal collar off and slide the rubber grommet/seal off the shaft. Then take a hammer/mini sledge and just beat the steering cable back into the hull. All this took about 10 minutes and is way easier than fighting the bitch from the inside of the hull.

You can then buy new plastic half moons, the metal collar, and rubber seal from OSDParts for $18.
