Stalling Sea Doo

Hi Guys, Maybe you can help me out; my '97 Sea Doo GS runs fantistic until it gets warm (anywhere from 5 to 15 minutes). It will then stall. I have to pull the key and reinsert for it to start. Usually it will run for a couple of more minutes and it will stall again. Finally it gets to the point where all it will do is activate the gas gage and won't engage the starter (break out the tow strap). I bought a new DSS key being told that they do go bad to no avail. Several dealers insist that the problem is fuel related but with the key pull deal and not engaging the starter I believe it's electrical. This is really getting frustrating and any advice you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Thank You.

I'm sorry I don't think I can be much help here. I am answering because I think I may have the same problem with my 97 GTX. Mine is not as frequent but the machine sometimes just quits for no reason whatsoever. If I pull off the key and put it back on, it will start right up and be fine for a while. Sometimes it will do it several times in a row.

Mine quits at random times: fast, slow, smooth, bumpy doesn't matter and it acts just like the key came off - just suddenly goes completely dead. Key off, key on, start and go.

I did not try replacing the key but one dealer told me to replace the DESS post which I tried but it did not fix it. I took it in for service and they said they found a loose ground wire but that did not fix it either. We live with it because it doesn't happen so much that it is unridable.

Hopefully someone else can think of something we haven't tried.

It very well could be a fuel problem. We have seen some where debris will come up get clogged and shut it down. When it shuts off the debris falls back down until it gets pumped up again. If the carbs have not been cleaned I would check that. There are 2 tiny filter in the carbs that will cause some head aches.

If its fuel, when its running just shut it, pull the return line off carb and crank engine
qnd note the flow rate (catch in bottle). When she does the shuts down on her own,
repete the proceedure. If nothing is changed, ride with the seat off and see if the
problem re-occurs. If not, you probly have exhause gases from a leak in the engine
compartment, and is asphyxiating the carb(s).

Thanks Bills86e & rxtxfreak88 for your suggestions about fuel issues. Only one thing bothers me though: If I shut the fuel valve off and run the engine out of gas and stall it, then open the valve and restart the engine, I don't have to pull the DESS key and reinsert it. Also, when it gets to the point when it will not run any longer, the start/stop switch will not activate the starter even if I pull the key and reinsert it. It usually beeps twice as it should but nothing happens. After a cool down period it will run fine and then the whole cycle will repeat. The season is about done here in Michigan so this winter I plan on pulling the carb and checking for crud.

shuts down

My guess is the mpem amp connectors were enlarged and now M/F corroded from
someone inserting electrical probe into female pin hole.

On the valve, remove and drill the three tubes with 3/16" drill bit, or replace
with a plastic fuel selector valve. Clean & airchuck.

Did you ever rectify your problem? I seem to have the same problem. The ski (97 Sea doo GTX) ran great last year, de-winterized in my driveway this year, took it out today, ran amazing for 30 minutes, then it died. Hit start button, got nothing. took out key and reinsert, started up and ran for maybe 2 minutes then died. Each successive starting attempt gave me a shorter and shorter running period to the point where it wouldn't even start. Got it home(30 minutes after being in water) and it started in my driveway and ran for nearly 15 minutes till I shut it off. I'm good with engines, but I know very little about PWC engines. It seems like an electrical problem, as it doesn't fade out and try to stay alive when it's dying, it's as if the plugs stop getting power. It doesn't bog at all, runs great, then dies immediately. Not sure if I'm explaining that correctly, been a long day trying to get back to the dock today.....

I only have a few weeks of the season left, so please help!!

Thanks in advance for any help

-Bri
