This is the scoop.
My wife loves the 2008 wake. But it is too many peso's for my budget. So I got this brainwave that I would buy her a 2005 RXT which is red and grey, and paint the grey part white so that it looked like the wake then put some wake stickers on it and voila, 2008 wake look alike. My plan was to take it to a body shop and have them do it right. Now I know this is possible but is it recomended. What are the cons to doing this? Thanks in advance.

Well I hope you are sitting down when they give you a price to GEL-COAT the hull for you....Automotive paint will be gone from that hull within a year or so, and won't hold up to any kind of beaching or road rash (from on trailer). This is what I was told when I was considering the same. But anyways, should be gel-coated and is pretty spendy I guess.

The part I am looking at painting is the main upper body portion, not the lower hull that comes into contact with water, trailer, and sand. Is it still recomended to not use automotive paint? Even for the upper part that recieves relatively little wear compared to the lower hull?
Thanks again!

Seadoos from the factory aren't painted. The color is contained in the Gel Coat. There are a few painted plastic parts on them...but automotive paint wouldn't look too good in my opinion. The cost of prep, paint and clear coat would like make up more than the difference between the two seadoos.

Note: 2008 is not the only year they made the red, white and black wake (2007 also) and the wake also comes with other accessories that the RXT does not, the ski pole and balast system would cost you another $1000 CAD.

Did you know they make a 2007 RXT in the same red, white and black (it's called viper red) as the wake. I have a 2007 RXP with that color scheme. Why not look around for one of those two and save tons of money. If its just the look she is going for then either of these will do. I personally think it's the best color scheme seadoo has ever put out!!

I am not sure where you are in canada but autotrader.ca currently has a 2007 RXT in viper red listed in Ontario....the site is down right now so I can't post a link.

Hope this helps!
