It was running great I got my new rv cover in put it all back together it was idling Different every couple of minutes when I revved it up it would take the rpms a couple of seconds to go back down and out of nowhere the rpms maxed out so I unplugged the key still running unplugged the spark plug wires and the plug on the front still running so I put my hand over the carburetor and it finally shut off what would cause something like this I have never had a motor keep running with no wires hooked up to it any help would be great

I may be way off but would love to be able to help another member out. I'm assuming you pulled the carbs to do the rotary valve. Make sure you don't have a clamp or zip tie rubbing on the butterfly pins sticking out the sides of the carbs.

The runaway is most likely caused by an air leak at the RV cover. You need to pull it and reinstall...

Also, if you ever have runaway like that, the choke is the best way to kill the motor. Be very careful reaching your hand in the hull while it’s running, as the motor can keep revving until it comes apart... Very dangerous situation!

Thanks for the advice I pulled the rv cover today and used gasket maker around it and put it back together I’m going through the carburetor right know and I found that the mag carburetor I’m guessing you call it the butterfly is bent would that have anything to do with it

The bent butterfly could be the issue, but it depends on how bent it is. Unless it’s very obviously bent, I’d still suspect that the RV cover isn’t sealing well....

You shouldn’t need to use any gasket maker on the cover. Obviously the rotary valve is very sensitive to cover clearance, so don’t add something that could change the dimension.

It’s very bent you can put it up to the light and see through it pretty good and I did not know if the gasket maker would make a difference but thanks

You should be using a new o-ring on the RV cover and it should not have atn RTV or anything like that on it, maybe a little grease just to hold it in place.

At this point you’re going to have to remove and reseal the RV cover with a new o ring and deal with the bent butterfly. A runaway ski is not something you want to take any chances with... A motor coming apart at 9k rpm while you’re sitting on top of it would make for a really bad day on the water, and a worse one in the ER...
