thanks for your posts and I have (with your help) managed to fix my PWC! Just to add what we did .... which may be of help to others is this....
1. removed the pwc from water and in order to get underneath it. (put back on the trailer at lake side.)
2. cut rope 1'' below the grill.
3. hook vice-grips onto the loose end of rope while counter-rotating drive-shaft.
4. after about 1 full counter revolution I was able to pry with vicegrips (tight at first) the entire rope would freely spin off the shaft with vice grips alone.
5. total length of rope was about 8'....wrapped about 12 x's.
important to note was the pulling hard on the vicegrips....
