Reserve tank question

I recently purchased a used and broken 1992 gts. I replaced the prop and wear ring. Ran great and then started bogging down. Finally pulled the unit going g into the gas tank and the fuel pick up staws were completely rotten and cracked and short with both screens gone. I could not tell which one should be the long and short so replaced both just one a bit shorter than the other. This leads me to two questions how short should of the main be and what will happen if I did them backwards? Will reserve just become the main and the main become the reserve? Thanks in advance!

Just mark the long and short on top for when you hookup your fuel lines. It doesn’t matter which is which.

I only replaced the two that go down inside the fuel tank and put new screens on them. What is the result if I put the long one where the short one was originally?

The only result if they were swapped is when you run out of fuel with the selector to "ON" your tank will be empty and have nothing left to get you back to shore.

Yes just mark the long one reserve and the short one on and make sure they go to the corresponding connections.

If that where the case could I just place the selector in the reserve position and it would be my primary and then my primary would become my reserve? I would get it fixed correctly once I got back home with tools.
