So bought a used 98 xp limited, carbs were off when I got it. I have been having a hell of a time with the line routing.. I think I have it figured out, and I am missing the pulse line. Goes from the crankcase under the rear carb to the carb. Can I use any 1/4” (6mm) vacuum hose or does this need to be a special line?

I use 1/4"fuel line. Not sure what you mean by vacuum hose but sounds like it might be better. LOL 1/4" fuel line has worked for me and is all I use but I try to keep the gray stuff that was on there. It's already formed with the bends and all. I worry about a tight bend and restricting the pulse.

If you need any info on line routing I have a set of carbs off a 951 on the bench and assembled. Gotta watch the hose routing so you don't get a rub on the throttle assembly. Be careful with the injection lines. You'll get a rub there as well. Good Luck !

The problem I have is the lines to the carb…3 connections on the carbs, 3 loose hoses, but I appear to be missing the pulse line altogether..

1.) is the Return
2.) is the Pulse line connection
3.) is the fuel inlet connection

I'd look at one of the gray lines as being the pulse line. but you need to get rid of the gray stuff (except if it is the pulse line :) ) Generally those lines come from the front of the ski into the carbs so they seem awfully long. One of those fittings on the engine casing is for the Rave Valves. That line goes under the front of the engine and into the Rave Solenoid.

I finally got it figured out... The pulse valve on the carburetor does not get hooked up. The PO installed an auxiliary pulse pump. I don't know if it is because the one on the carb is bad, or if it was a misguided attempt to get additional power... You can see it in the first picture of my original post, at the bottom. So that is why I wound up with 4 connections and only 3 hoses... I plan on playing around with it to find out, as I replaced the pulse line (labeled #1) and it actually had a split on the back side. So I am thinking they had a bad hose, and thought it was the pulse on the carb, when in reality it was a split hose....

These things can be quite and adventure. Part of the fun and part of the PIA. LOL Good JOB sleuthing !!! :D
