I just replaced the rubber boot, carbon seal, and metal hat on a 96 GTI. The metal hat would not slide over the c-clip to let it sit in the bore. I almost decided to just let it ride but I didn’t want to risk the RPM’s of the shaft throwing the c clip off, or uneven wear. The cause of this not fitting is the aftermarket Titan metal hat is a thicker metal (smaller bore) than the original metal hats. All I did was take the C-clip’s outer side to a bench grinder very lightly and evenly. You can see on the third photo even after grinding, it still would’nt sit in the bore. Last photo shows it fitting perfectly. I feel this is much better than just letting it not slide over the clip. Just had to make sure to keep it really even and keep it cool with water.
