Long story short, my sister and I picked up a repainted 96 gsx (another build coming later) that came with a blown engine and another I was told was rebuilt, more on that later (thus the title). We got it for $1100, and it came with a huge custom double trailer that I swear you could have fit 3 skis on. So I traded the trailer for a 89 Seadoo sp I think. It ran and came on a single galvanized trailer. Traded that for a 88 Chevy Jimmy 2 wheel drive automatic with zero rust and a small utility trailer. I immediately sold the jimmy to a guy who wanted to make it into a dragster for $875. I kept the trailer for a couple years then got $200 out of it. I then picked up a 96 Gtx on a single trailer while in Virginia Beach For $700. (another build coming later). I then picked up a hotrods crank brand new in the box for $125 and another single trailer around town for $200. I installed the engine and I couldn't keep it running right. After double and triple checking everything, and reinstalling the engine, my sister and I had a falling out and they sat in storage for 2 years. Then out of the blue she calls me and asked if I wanted to buy her out. So A friend and I did just that. So I went through all the parts I had and I was short a few things, and in buying a rotary valve cover off CL for ten bucks dudes neighbor had a 97 GSX he want $400 for. I bought it. So this is the third one I picked up but the first one I decided to build. So this is my first Doo. Always wanted a Seadoo as a kid, and as a big kid, I do what I want.
Now that she looks good I through that engine in I was told was good, hoping it was. After messing with it and reading all these forums, I pulled it and tore it apart. I found silver goop in it and all it would do is backfire really loud. Found the brass ring in shreds. Pulled the crank, looked brand new, all bearings tight but one that was so worn it would wobble. I now have 4 bad engines and 3 non running skis. Made a deal with a guy in Utah he gave me 2 WSM cranks w/ a 1 yr warranty for $125 each I gave him 4 cranks and a engine core. put it together with new pistons, crank, rotary shaft, carbs rebuilt by a local who didn't check the needles and seats cause "they never go bad." Guess what wouldn't start when warm. Hmm. So I replace those, the fuel lines, something ate my wear ring over the winter so I replaced that. Changed the pump oil, replaced the vts box and boot. The Dess post, Had a new key keyed. had the rotary valve cover milled and all 4 carb bolt holes rethreaded because they failed and I ended up with a runaway. Now she starts warm runs fast, but she keeps melting rave valves I've changed the housings and the valves were new. I believe it's the port in the cylinder but can't find any specs to verify????
Good story. If you put the new raves in used housings then the exhaust heat is likely coming between the housing hole and the rave's shaft. Try new O-rings under the housings but if that does not stop it then your gonna need housings.
What happened to the new Hot Rods crank in the box?
