I know this has been discussed before, and I have a shop manual for my Sportster 1800, BUT I have an Oil problem I need to track down. This is the second time my Rotary gear is stripped in just a few hours of use.

I have been running premix 50-1 in addition to oil injection due to break-in procedure.

My oil consumption from the oil reservoir has been abnormally low.

I have seen the oil pump block-off plates for sale, and they lead me to believe that the rotary shaft cavity is just a sump. Does the pump also circulate the oil inside this cavity? if so how?

I am seeing a air on the oil return line on the one engine with the issue.

I bled the pump using the bleed screw when the engine was put in. as soon as I opened the bleed screw oil came out, so I'm unsure what's going on. There is some air on the return line. Since the system is gravity fed I'd think the presence of this air is a sign something is messed up. I will tear down tomorrow, but any suggestions as to what may be going on are most welcome.

That must suck!!!
Hopefully Dr will chime in. He will be best source of info on that....

I remember asking if oil circulates I think answer was no. It just bathes gear so there is no consumption.

The gear is bathed in oil but it is not consumed. The oil does circulate. If the injection system is blocked off there still needs to be oil in the tank to lube the rotary shaft.

So if it's a sump, and I'm seeing air in the return line below the tank, something's bound to be clogged... The oil filters are new. I have not checked the check valve at the top of the tank.

I'll have more info once I've torn down into it.
