My buddy has a 98 SeaRayder with the SportJet 175, the other day it started running weird bogging out and dying after a good cruise, we shut it down, tried to start it back up, and got nothing. We floated for about 20 min trying to get a tow in, when he decided to try it again, he turned the key and it started, idled fine, tried to take it to plane and it tried to die, deiced (reluctantly) to idle it back to shore since nobody wanted to help 2 stranded souls. When we got it home we changed out the fuel filters, and checked everything over, everything seemed fine. Hooked the boat up to water and started it in the yard, it smoked like crazy and ran pretty good. Took it to the dock, started right up again smoking quite a bit, took it out on the water, ran great for about half an hour then stated running like crap again. Shut it down, and let it sit for around 20 min, it started up and we were able to head back to shore, about the time we got close to the ramp it started running poorly again.
After doing some reading I have found that the oil injection pump on these engines tend to be problematic. Everything on the carbs checks out, and the electrical system would appear to be good since it will run so good. I am wondering if the oil injection is starting to crap out, does anybody have any experiences with these engines? And does anybody know what the syntoms of a failing oil injection unit might be? I know that if it wasnt getting any oil at all it would just clank, clank, boom, but it appears to still run and burn oil at idle. This weekend we are going to switch it over to premix and see if it fixes the problem. Are we on the right track?
