No electrical power 96 XP

Went to the lake yesterday and burned a tank of gas through the 96xp and had a great day. I loaded everything up and I went to start it on the trailer to get water out of the exhaust and nothing. No lights from gauge, beeps or anything. I figured it was the key or post so I kept trying different angles while pressing the start and every so often the multi gauge will flash all 4 red lights but not fuel level and I'll hear a click. Today, I jumped the starter solenoid and it turned right over. Checked continuity on main ground from bat and little ground that goes to rear ebox, both good. Ran a ground from mpem to engine block just to be safe and nothing. Checked mpem fuses and both are good. I'm thinking the mpem is not getting power but I'm not sure the easiest way to test. Any suggestions? Thanks!

There are four wires running from the black box to the grey one in front. The black is your ground and the red/purple is your power to the MPEM. Test for voltage up there and try it when you hit the start button. Sometimes you will have it(12v) but not under load because of a bad connection or a battery that went south.

Battery is strong, I am getting 12V in rear ebox and fuses are good. Everything is super clean too. No water intrusion at all

Well your looking for 12.something or at least high 11's. The lack of power is your problem, you can't run an MPEM on that obviously. The 15 amp fuse in the black box runs it. Clean and tighten the ground connections on the base of the coil and check for voltage at the solenoid where the small red wire is. You can track down your bad connection by following the power from the battery to see where it drops off.

Thanks for all the help, I checked the pins today and they looked good. I started to trace the 12V postive line and realized i had tested the wrong purple/red wire the other night. I actually do have 12V all the way into the front ebox until where the main 12V line and the MPEM positive wire(?) merge into one female connector. There it drops to a steady 8.25V until i hit start button and it drops to around 2.8-2.9V. This was tested with the 6 pin going to mag disconnected.

You cleaned up that connection right? All the grounds are good? Sounds like the ground cable broke at the 90 where it bolts to the starter or something. The grey box grounds from the 6 pin plug in the front of the mag cover on the engine so check that out also.

Yup sure did. The 6pin male connector in the mag cover felt a bit loose but all pins seem to be intact. I reconnected it and i have a steady 12v at the purple/red wire now. All fuses on MPEM measure 12V. The 6pin mag was unplugged when I tested and got the the 8.25V. I was using the ground inside the ebox for my test so I'm not sure if that had anything to do with the low voltage or not. I pulled the main ground as well and it was dirty at the 90* connection but cleaning it up didnt change anything. I checked the grounds in the front and rear ebox as well and they all seem good. Thanks for your help, this is my first run in with electronics on skis!

Edit - I started to mess with 6pin mag connector and when i put some inward force on it I got the ski to show 4 red lights and beep once a few times in a row then nothing again. Could be random idk. I tested the 6pin coming off the ebox and it has power so I'm thinking its something inside the mag cover causing my problem?

I double checked everything again last night and still cant figure it out... I tested the purple wire coming off the MPEM and its dead. If it was an issue with the mag connector, grounding the mpem to the bat would allow it to turn on correct? I picked up a 96XP with good electronics the other week so I'm going to try the mpem in it just to make sure mine didn't die or blow internal fuse

Swapped the whole front ebox from the parts ski I bought and I have power! Unfortunetly, I didnt get the DESS key with the ski so I still need to figure out whats wrong with my ebox. I'm thinking its either a bad MPEM / blown internal fuses, going to do some research on testing the mpem

Yeah definitely, I bought that ski to flip but if the MPEM on my main ski is dead then not having to buy one on eBay nearly pays for it. I guess its time to steal the multi gauge for my 97 SPX lol. I really appreciate your help and I'll try to post back when I figure out exactly what failed

Yea, sorry, I never fixed the issue. Just put a nasty bandaid on it. I say nasty because I ran a positive sire straight to the fuse terminal. I thought my MPEM was broken, so felt like I had nothing to lose. Fed it power, and the sucker ran. Then at some point, I realized I didn't need it anymore. I've since decommissioned my cobbled wire setup and haven't had any problems since. Hope you get yours straightened out. It could've been your mag connector, as I've gone through several rebuilds where I've swapped mag covers around.
