Hey Seadoo folks!! I am going to pick up my new to me GTX tomorrow morning. The guy said it ran last season, but I know I’ll still have to do some maintenance to get it going. What are some things I should do to prepare it to get running? I’m thinking new battery, rebuilding the carbs, maybe changing out all the hoses and fuel lines and flushing the gas tank, I was wondering if I should just rebuild the top end for safe measures? First to get it running though. Should I run synthetic in it since it’s an older machine? Any assistance to help a new Seadoo owner out would be of GREAT appreciation

1st thing check compression. 140-150 is in the good range. If your in the 130s it time to rebuild the top end. The next thing is your carbs. Go ahead and rebuild them. Use only oem kits. If your fuel lines are gray replace them. Check stator. With the Gtx running put your tester probes on your battery. Red on red, black on black. You should read 13.5 to 14.3 . These numbers aren’t exact . I’m sure someone will chime in with the exact numbers. This is off the top of my head. Let us know how it goes. These steps will be a good start.

Also on the compression test , you want the two cylinders to read within a few pounds of each other.

So, I had the chance to look under the seat at the engine. I took both plugs out, and they were pretty gummed up. I tried to turn the shaft, and surprisingly enough, it spun with ease. I think that’s a good thing. Not so good news. I noticed the reverse plate is missing, but the arm to activate it pulls out and returns back easily. I found some hex head bolts (2) and a bolt head that was from “something”. I was told the oil injection was deleted so, I’m wondering if that’s what they were to. I also found a hose with a bolt in it. The lines coming out of the fuel sending unit were the tempo lines so, I’m going to change all the fuel lines out. I just need to get a battery and see if it turns over, or possibly actually starts!! I’m being positive about this, and I’m hoping for the best. Any input?

I don’t have a compression tester, but I made a new post of my current findings. I’m making this a project so I know it’s going to take some time. I’m doing a little bit at a time and just working on trying to get it running...eventually. I’m not in a rush, and that’s a good thing.

Please keep just one thread going. It is hard to follow and help if you jump to multiple threads.

You can buy a compression tester at autozone for 25 bucks. The rest of it doesn’t matter until you verify compression.

Ok. I checked out the motor a little. Plugs were gummed up. Tops of pistons were black from carbon. My buddy told me that the PO must have used too much oil in the mixture. I guess it was running rich? I was surprised to find out the shaft turned pretty easily. I took that as a good sign. I don’t have the funds to actually do anything worthwhile as of yet because I have to catch up on some bills from when I was unemployed but this is going to be a nice little project for me and I’m taking it a little at a time.
I checked around the engine compartment, as well as the other compartments starting from the front and here’s what I noticed. The bucket under the front cover seems to have caulk going around the bucket and the hull. The bucket came out ok but I was still wondering about that. I need to replace the 2 enclosures for the fire extinguisher and the vehicle registration and stuff. Noticed all the fuel lines and vents are tempo so, those will be replaced throughout. Needs fuel tank flushed. Needs readout guages changed also. Steering works fine.
I checked under the steering where the fuel knob (which needs to be replaced, as it’s missing) is, and from looking at the manual, there is a flip switch between the reverse handle (which pulls out and pushes back in fairly easily) and the throttle handle which does not show in the manual so I don’t know what it’s for. I’ll have to follow that out. Somehow the fuel knob was missing when I got it and I’m thinking I should just replace the whole unit.
Other that the shaft turning easily, and the pistons black from carbon, I did notice some lines with bolts in the ends, and clamped. I was told the oil injection was deleted. I also found some “extra” hex bolts, and one torn off bolt head in the floor of the engine bay. I’m hoping they are “extras” that were lying around his place. Battery cables need to be changed. There is about a 1” hose with an elbow that leads to the bottom of the engine bay on the passenger side in the back. I don’t know wher it goes to, but, I think it is for a bilge system maybe?
In the back of the engine bay also on the passenger side on the back of the hull next to what looks like a vent, there is a pump looking item with a connector of some sort with a cover and it’s zip tied. I don’t know what that is either. Outside in the back, the reverse plate is missing. I’m assuming the PO backed into something and broke it, so it will need to be replaced. I also noticed in the back where the pump assembly attaches to the hull there is some sort of black silicone that looks like someone took it off and replaced it. I’m still wondering about that. Well, this is just my initial observation of the jetski. Hopefully I have been descriptive enough to allow for some info on it. Yes, I do know I need to first check for compression, and to see if it even turns over. I heard to not go to Harbor Freight and but the 30 dollar compression tester as they are inaccurate. I was told to go to autozone and rent one. Thoughts on that? Well this is the beginning. I have a bunch of photos also, and I’m thinking of starting a vlog on my YouTube page as I don’t really see a lot of info on 1995 GTX’s concerning repair/maintenance.
Oh, one more question. This is a 3seater, but I’m trying to figure out how to remove the seat cushion. The other 2 have latches but the front one doesn’t. I would like to get under it and clean under there. Also, I scrubbed this hull with a brush but there still seems to be dirt embedded in the fiberglass. I scrubbed with a cloth and nothing. Is there something I can use th clean it and make the fiberglass white and clean again? Thanks folks!

I like a project but it sounds like you are going to dump a ton of money into a ski that isn’t that desirable.
Black pistons is perfectly normal on a 2 stroke.

It’s something for me to do. Something to occupy my free time. I don’t really know a lot of people and I kind of live out in farm country so. Yeah, it may not be that desireable, but it’s just for me so, I’m ok with that. I’m going to try to have it ready by next season. I figure that will give me enough time to do the right thing and have a nice older jetski
