New gas & oil questions...
Just bought a ski (99 951gsx limited) that has been sitting the past few seasons...
What should I do with the gas that's currently in the tank? Any easy way to drain it so in can put some fresh stuff in there?
Also the same question on th oil? Easy way to drain it and replace with some new stuff that you guys recommend?
Thanks!
Motor is brand new in the ski, but anything else I should be replacing because of it sitting as well?

You have to drain the gas. Even with fuel stabilizer in it, it can't keep gas fresh for years. I think max is about 1 year. You have to siphon the gas out. Personally, I would clean the entire fuel system and replace the fuel lines if they are the stock grey tempo fuel lines. This includes at least cleaning the carbs and possibly rebuilding them. The stock gas lines corrode from ethanol and decompose into a gummy green goo that clogs the fuel system up.

Unless you know what brand of oil is in it, you should drain, clean, replace filter, and change small injection lines. The rule is to never mix oil brands/types as you don't know how they will react together and could gel up and clog your system which leads to a blown motor. The oil tank is easy enough to get out to clean. Clamp off lower hose, disconnect at filter, disconnect fill tube, etc. and remove.

The GSXL's are a pain to work on, though, as they have limited free space to work with.

Just a word of warning. These machine will run well if they are properly maintained. Even though it is new to you and all you want to do is ride, you could blow your motor if you don't make sure everything is in running order. You could get lucky if you ignore it or you could have a $1k+ engine replacement you have to pay for. Do your homework and get very familiar with the machine or have a mechanic whom you can tell is very experienced with this particular motor.

Thanks for the detailed response ! Very much appreciated...
The motor in the ski is brand new, from seadoo, with less than 3hrs on it...($2,500)
The grey fuel lines have been replaced after the motor was installed
The carbs are off right now because previous owner couldn't get it to stay running so he tried to replace carbs..bought the wrong ones, then bought the right ones and never even installed them....
I'm brining it to my friend who works on all my small motor stuff...he went to school and works at a ski, bike, quad, etc dealer ...
I told him about the carb situation and he said it's no problem he will get it up and running smooth....just wanted to have an ideanof what else I can tell him to go over as well...I was told to check the fuel bypass switch, the vms motor, the prop and wear ring, and I think that's it....the starter is also brand new...so I guess I'll bring him a can of some good gas and tell him to siphon it out and replace..I'm sure he has good oil at work to replace the stuff in there now, but what kind is recommended?
About how many tanks of fuel will one tank of oil last?
Any other info you can provided is very much appreciated
Thanks!
