i will be taking my pump off the ski for some maintenance and i will be inspecting the grease in the pump cone.. ive heard replacing the grease with oil.. has anyone done this? and what kind of oil do you use?
Back in the day the cones were filled with oil (gear lube to be exact). Then they switched over to grease. Why go back? It is far messier especially if you're doing it with the pump on the ski. Just scoop out the old grease and replace it with some marine grease or synthetic grease and you'll be good to go.
I agree with KK. Stay with grease. I got into my pump assy end of last season for maint/wear ring replace and followed shop manual call out for synthetic grease in da cone. EZ. No muss no fuss.
I totally agree with that, that's why I'm on here but I've seen a couple videos that from the force of the pump it pushes all the grease into the end of the cone drying out the bearing and most guys were changing back over to oil so I was just tryna get some opinions..

I see what you're about the grease. The bearing failure rate in the pump is so low that you'd have to pretty much pour saltwater in the cone and ride for a season like that to kill it.
