I need to set the idle speed on my 1995 SPX, can anyone recommend a cheep tool to measure RPM or are there any good apps that work well, I am using a Samsung phone.
Check ebay, i have a cheap one and it is good for this job.
You just point it at the spinning shaft. The shaft has to have a piece of shinny tape on it.
I have one, and have used it with a variety of motors. It will give you a pretty good ballpark, but I have not found them to be terribly accurate at higher RPMs. The key is that you have to have good access to whatever is rotating. You need a piece of reflective tape on the spinning part (i.e. flywheel, shaft, etc) and the ability to point the device to where the tape is. It also helps if you are shaded from direct light.
I also use my timing light as a instantaneous RPM. Problem with that is that it is actually measuring the spark plug charge frequency, and not literally the RPM of the engine.
