My 1996 GTI will start and runs perfect once started. However today when I took it out I pressed the start button and got a click. I press the start button again and got a click. I took the key off placed it back on and it started right up. I took it out for a spin for about 30 minutes. Shut it off and it did the same thing again. Each time I get one click and no engagement of starter. Tried 3 or 4 times removing and replacing the key each time and than it started right up. I had charged the battery right before I left on my trickle charger until it said charged so the issue wasnt a low battery. My ski has 150 compression. Any ideas on what I should check or replace?

Still might be a battery issue. I would load test the battery at an auto parts store to rule it out.

Also, the starter might be getting weak. I would try it with the plugs out, and spark plug cables grounded to see if the starter works under no load. This might give you some clues.

But start with the battery. I have chased my tail on a few occassion because I was convinced tbe battery was good when it wasn't.
