Intake Grate suggestions/help

I know this subject has been talked about quite a bit but having a hard time distilling down to an answer so I will throw it out:

My boat has the stock Hydro Surge Grate (I think its part number 856627T3 but mine doesn't have the Spring Inlet Grate p/n 24-856628T). I've had trouble with debris getting sucked into the jet (plastic milk bottle and tree limbs - my home lake is not the most pristine lake out there).

I was wondering if anyone had a recommendation on whether I should switch to one of the other intake grates like the 852962T or 854810T1 (or if I added 24-856628T if that would help from sucking up the debris).

Thanks!

HYDRO SURGE PROBLEMS (long but compelling)

This is a different point of view on the importance of replacing your Hydrosuck grate. ASAP! It's rather long, but if you think you might not need to replace your grate in a hurry, you should definitely read. Just yesterday I was cruising along having a blast. I had my whole family with me, Wife, two teenage daughters, and 5 year old daughter. We had been on our way back from the Chesapeake Bay, had just less than an hour back to the dock. We cut off with the renowned fuel filter/seperator problem, and did our humiliating little J turn. Boat wouldn't start. Man no juice, horn wouldn't even work. Turned out to be only a loose terminal. Up and running in no time. But now our boat will hardly cruise at 5 MPH, serious cavitation, Over 3000 RPM sounded like the motor was going to fall out of the boat. So we were limping back to the dock, no problem, right? Well, now we have a sever thunderstorm on our heals. There was lightening flashing 4 and 5 bolts at a time, every ten seconds off our starboard. My kids were scared to death, one literally in tears. Boats were flying by us left an right running back in from the storm. We made it back to the pier just in time. My wife and I were left in the thunder and lightening to get the boat on the lift. Sorry, I didn't bother to rinse and flush, that will wait until the morning. I did however, after the storm passed, went out and checked to see what the damage was. We had sucked a water bottle (with a Peanut M&M wrapper inside)into the hydrosuck grate. Yeah, I'm a new owner and have been reading about this "Grate", nothing "grate" about it, and have put off replacing it because in my area there are really not many weeds, and I don't have to worry about shallow water. I did plan to replace it but was in no hurry to. I have ordered the 11 tine stainless from BAM Marine, that very night, and I will replace it the day I receive it. If you are never more than fifteen minutes from the pier/ramp (at paddle speed), or if you don't have to worry about sucking ANYTHING, bottle, bag, six pack ring, stick, pine cone, etc. then you probably don't need a fixed grate, but who are you kidding? www.mercruiserparts.com Part No 854810T1. Order it today.
