Installed pump seal - backwards!

I've been rebuilding the pump on my new-to-me 2003 GTI. First time working on a pump. We got the bearings in OK, but after installing the seal, noticed that the shop manual says not once, but twice, to ensure the spring goes to the outside. We have it on the inside. What are the consequences of leaving it as is? I think I'll damage it trying to remove it, and will have to order another. TIA.

No, haven't seen them installed backwards.
1. You will not be able to get it out without damaging it.
2. It has a correct direction for a reason.
3. You don't want water in your pump bearings.

So your options are to run it then check for water contamination or replace it.
