Hi All,

So I have a 1997 Sea-Doo GSX I bought a new-used info gauge and I hooked it up to my jet ski. The problem is when I plug my key in and try to start it up it will only start for a few seconds then die. The screen also has a "12-volt low" alarm when trying to start. But it's not the battery because it's fully charged and was replaced about a month ago. But when I unplug the info gauge and plug in the key, it starts right up and will idle and runs like a champ. What do I need to do fix it?

I have all new fuses in the board and none of them are blown either, the pins where the connector connects to are not corroded and the connector fits correctly.

Okay, update,

I took it on the lake and it ran fine for about an hour, still needs carb tuning, not a big deal. But after a while, the jet ski wouldn't even start. Swam it back to shore got it on the trailer. Then when we got it out we started it out of the water and it started right up. WEIRD!!!

I think the gauge is doing what it is supposed too. Could it be the battery, rectifier or starter?

Hi All,

The info gauge is also flashing the "12v low" alarm. Could it be the battery, the battery was replaced a month ago although it isn't the best brand, rectifier or starter?

I have heard that on some skis INFO Gauges can affect the operation of the ski. Try riding it with the gauges unplugged. Check your connections on the MPEM. They get funky sometimes. I've had to clean a few.

I rode it today with the gauges unplugged to bypass the "12volt" alarm, this alarm was shutting the system down, so I'm thinking it is the battery I read the reviews on it and they are not good. The battery that was replaced before I got the jet ski, it is an Exide supercrank xtra. Some of the reviews even said it discharges itself within a month. I am going to take it to my local battery store, have it tested and see if that is the case, BatteriesPlus most likely will get a new one either way.

I'll check the MPEM wires again but last time I checked they had dielectric grease in them and seem good but doesn't hurt to look again.

Could a bad battery cause these issues? Also, any battery recommendations if this is the case.

To add on to it anytime when I had the gauges plugged in it would start for 5 seconds then turn the jet ski off but when I unplugged it the jet ski would run fine. But it is very odd to me how the jet ski would die only after an hour of use on the water. As well as the gauge telling me the "12volt" alarm.

You can buy a cheap battery tester. I have a one that tests the battery for you, tells if it is healthy, percentage of charge and can check it while connected to the ski.. Might even check the charging system. Good to have. I don't leave home with the skis unless the batteries are good n hot.

I have been buying the Yuasa YTX20-HLbs from amazon prime for $85. Sealed AGM battery and really high CCA.

Agreed, I also forgot to mention that the battery had been charged overnight as well and my battery charger was showing 98 percent this morning. I have been checking the battery with a voltmeter and it seems normal but my concern is the fact that the battery could discharge itself. So when I checked the battery standing still it was about 12.68 volts. When I turned it over without the gauges plugged in and ran it at about 3/4 throttle the voltmeter was reading 13.53 volts which seems normal for the charging system correct? I'm guessing that's about 5500 rpms but I can't really tell without the gauges. But I did not see the typical 15 volts over to tell me if it is the rectifier going bad.

A good functioning regulator will produce around 13.5V at 4,000 rpm. You shouldn’t be seeing 15V, I would say around 14V would be as high as you want.

Correct mine is reading about 13.53 volts when I go about 3/4 throttle so I do not think it is the regulator.

Could it be anything else?

Yep, I agree! I will update tomorrow.

Also, quick question if it's not the battery or the regulator, could it be the starter getting weak? Or anything else, maybe MPEM? But I'm probably going to get a new battery either way because I do not trust this brand after the scary reviews. I will post though if it failed the test though or not.

The info gauge allowing it to start is really strange so I’m not totally sure on that.

Wait do you mean not allowing it?

The info gauge when plugged in shuts the jet ski down with the "12-volt" alarm showing.

But when the info gauge is not plugged in, it starts.

Sorry if I had confusion in the post earlier. Hope that clarifies it.

Thank you for your help by the way much appreciated!

Alright, guys here's the update,

Went and got the old battery tested that was put in before I got the jet ski and it only had 150 CRANKING AMPS!

Got a new battery the Duracell Ultra which by the way has 442 cranking amps and a 2-year warranty for $120 at batteries plus!

Plugged it in the alarm went away on the info gauges and allowed me to start the jet ski and it is running great now! All I have to do is tune the high-speed screws and I will be good to go I think!

Thank you for all your help seriously!!!!
