Impeller swap in Challenger boat

Mercury?

I'm assuming you have the Mercury engine in the boat.

Disconnect shift and steering cables at reverse gate and rudder.
Remove reverse gate/rudder/nozzle as an assembly.
Remove four screws securing nozzle to stator. Remove reverse gate/rudder/nozzle assembly.
Remove two screws securing trim plate to ride plate and wear ring.
Remove four screws securing stator assembly to drive housing. Remove stator assembly.
Drain stator by tilting stator forward and allowing the oil to drain over the impeller shaft
seals. Complete oil draining by removing stator fill plug and pour the remaining oil out the fill plug hole.

Remove intake grate and use a wrench to hold the impeller shaft for removing the impeller
nut.
While holding impeller shaft, remove impeller nut using Special Tool 91-850297, or a really deep socket. An impact helps with this.
Now remove the four bolts holding the wear housing and remove it if your planning on replacing it.

Do you happen to know what size the impeller nut is?

Is it poss. to remove the impeller and the shaft together?

I'm torn between having mine refurbished and buying a Solas impeller. If I have mine refurb. does anyone have any recomendations?

The nut is 1-13/16, but the problem is it is super deep. You will either have to buy two cheap sockets and cut and weld them together, or buy the mercury tool. Part number 91-850297.

There is no way to pull the shaft out without pulling the engine and disassembling the pump, so you must remove the nut. As for reconditioning there is nowhere that I know of that does the Mercury impellers, but I'm in Canada so you may want to check around.

Yes, Impros will rework/refurb the M2 impellers. They have mine right now. It's supposed to ship today. $120 for their "Worx" (everything) service.

Here's their contact info:

Their website is light on jetboat impeller data, but give them a call or email and they'll put your mind at ease.

So what are they doing to yours? Is it just a reman or are they also doing some performance upgrades?

Just bringing it back into spec...

I'm doing a mini-overhaul on the engine and jetdrive. While everything is disassembled I thought it was a good time to bring the impeller back into "new" condition. There's really nothing wrong with it, no nicks or dings at all, but all impellers wear around their circumference and their leading edges dull a bit from friction with the water.

In the meantime I've resurfaced (with JBWeld) and repainted (with Mercury's own enamel paint) the wear ring. Once the impeller is back I'm expecting the clearance between them to be factory tight. It was already well within spec (spec is 0.100 inches, mine was 0.035) but tighter is better and more efficient.
