Impeller shaft question

Hi everyone, the impeller shaft on my 95 xp has very little back and forth play when the pump is installed on the ski but when I remove the pump from ski the impeller shaft feels like normal back and forth play (similar to the play on my 96 xp) im wondering though when my 96 xp pump is assembled on the ski it still has a decent amount of back and forth play like maybe 1cm but my 95 xp with the pump installed has only maybe 2mm-3mm of back and forth play its very tight that way, but with pump removed the play is normal back and forth like 1cm. The pump spins free and smooth just has me worried because I think it should have a lot more play. and there is no up or down/side to side play so its good there. The only aftermarket part in my driveline is a WSM PTO boot I never took apart the jet pump just the whole assembly was removed so I didn't think the thrust washer and bearing is an issue.

Hi,

Two things come to mind.
Were there rubber grommets on both end of driveshaft and is the plastic cone newer style with pusher spring?

Those two things help keep the rattle you hear in the driveline when its out of the water.

I have bought a newer pusher style cone but its not even installed and the play that I think should be there isn't, with the pump cone off on my 96 xp there is about a little less than 1cm of back and forth play. with the pump cone off on my 95 xp the play is only about 2mm you can barily see the shaft move its very tight, The engine was also alighed using the alighment tool when I installed it a week ago. AI don't know if my 96 xp has the bumper installed in its pto as ive never taken it apart yet but I assume so or I would have stripped the splines by now I would think.
