Impeller cutting into plastic

Thought the engine sounded a tad louder last weekend. Today we had the boat on the water (2003 sportster LE 2 cyl.) and felt some vibrations we were not sure were normal and boat was laboring and thought we had picked up a stick or something. When we got to shore and looked the boat over, we noticed that it looks like the impeller was cutting into black plastic something. Any ideas of what is going on?
