Are there any exceptions to the serial number not showing the model year? I was looking at a PWC with a serial number that was registered as the year before. ends in 98, registered as a 97 Any exceptions, or was this boat just registered with the wrong info from the begining?

Could be, or it could could be a helluva lot of legal trouble, I'd check the actual HIN to see what it says as far as being stolen etc.

Could be an honest mistake if the numbers are the same aside from the last two, or if the guy had two skis and sold one with the wrong title.

I agree, That thought crossed my mind too. The ski still has its HIN number decal on the hull that matches the HIN plate & that matches the registration, howevever the HIN shows 98. weird. I susppose it could have been bought in 97 even though it was a 98 model & just registered wrong.

If the hin matches the title, but the title says 97 year, I'd say it's a clerical error that could be cleared up, or just ignored.

Yep, the DMV will fix it, they know the last 2 digits for the seadoos (not sure of boats or other pwc's) show the year, my 00 XP when I had it had 99 written on the title, they corrected it to show 00 after seeing that the last 2 digits of the HIN were 00
